Making the Most of a Woodward Park Visit

Woodward Park sits in midtown Tulsa along Peoria Avenue and Twenty-First Street, close to the Brookside area. The rose displays draw the most attention, but the grounds also take in azalea plantings, rock gardens and sloping lawns shaded by mature trees. The neighbouring Tulsa Garden Center and the adjoining Linnaeus Teaching Garden add more to explore, so even a short walk can cover a good variety of planting styles.

When to go

The park changes a great deal through the year. Spring is usually the showiest season, when the azaleas and early blooms come in and the lawns fill with photographers and families. Roses tend to peak in late spring and again in autumn, while summer evenings are best enjoyed after the worst of the Oklahoma heat has passed. If you are planning a stroll before a show, aim for the hour or so before sunset, when the light is softer and the paths are cooler.

• Footwear: paths include slopes, steps and uneven stone, so comfortable shoes beat boots you have saved for the dance floor. Bring a change if you want to look sharp later.
• Parking: street and lot parking near the park can fill up on busy spring weekends, so allow extra time.
