Nationally sold tickets for Paul F. Tompkins’s Varietopia: The 21st Century Variety Show

What Makes a Live Variety Show Work

The variety show is one of the oldest formats in live entertainment, reaching back through television specials and radio revues to vaudeville stages where comics, singers, magicians and novelty acts shared a single bill. Paul F. Tompkins, known for his improvisational comedy, his podcast work and his long association with Comedy Bang! Bang!, has built a reputation on quick wit and playful character work. That background suits a format where the host holds a night of different acts together and keeps the energy moving between them. The 2024 touring dates for Varietopia have now passed, but the idea behind the show is still worth a closer look.

A good variety night depends on pacing. A host warms up the room, introduces guests with enough context that the audience cares about them, and fills the gaps between sets so the evening never stalls. Improvisers tend to do this well because they react to whatever happens on stage, including mistakes, instead of sticking rigidly to a script.

Why the format suits smaller rooms too

Variety and mixed-bill nights are not only for large theatres. Saloons and clubs have hosted them for generations: a local band, a stand-up set, a songwriter round and maybe a raffle or costume contest, all in one evening. The close quarters of a bar mean performers can talk directly with the crowd, which is a large part of the appeal. If you enjoy that loose, anything-can-happen feeling, keep an eye on our events listings and live music nights.

Tips for catching a touring comedy or variety show

• Buy from official sources. Use the performer's own website or the venue's box office to avoid inflated resale prices and invalid tickets.
• Check the age policy. Comedy shows often carry age restrictions, and some venues require ID at the door.
• Arrive early. Seating at theatre and club shows is sometimes general admission, and openers may start promptly.
• Plan your ride home. Late finishes and parking in busy districts are easier when you sort transport ahead of time.

Whether it is a nationally touring host or a homegrown lineup, a well-run variety night offers something increasingly rare: a shared evening where you never quite know what comes next.
