How to Measure Yourself and Choose Between Sizes
A size chart is only as useful as the measurements you bring to it. The quickest way to get an accurate number is with a soft tape measure and a plain T-shirt or thin layer on, rather than a heavy flannel or jacket.
Taking your measurements
- Chest: Stand relaxed with your arms at your sides. Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, just under the armpits and across the shoulder blades. Keep it level and snug but not tight.
- Waist: Measure around your natural waistline, usually just above the belly button. Breathe normally and don't pull the tape in.
- No tape measure? Lay a shirt that fits you well flat on a table. Measure straight across from armpit to armpit and double the figure. That gives you a close estimate of the chest size the shirt is cut for.
When you fall between two sizes
Plenty of people land on the border between two rows of the chart. A few rules of thumb help:
- For a relaxed, broken-in look, the kind that suits a long night at a show, size up.
- For a trimmer fit to wear under an open shirt or denim jacket, take the smaller size.
- If your chest and waist point to different sizes, go by the chest for tees and tops. That is where a shirt that's too small feels it first.
Shrinkage and care
Cotton garments can shrink slightly, especially in a hot wash or a tumble dryer. If you're close to the upper limit of a size, the next size up gives you some room. To keep prints and fabric in good shape, turn shirts inside out, wash them cold and hang them to dry. Avoid ironing directly over a printed design.
Buying as a gift
If you're picking something out for someone else, check the tag on a shirt they already wear often and compare it with the chart above. When in doubt, the larger size is usually the safer choice, since a roomy tee still gets worn and a tight one often doesn't.
